More Can Be Done for Safety on the Water, But Resources Are Available
May 29, 2025
There’s renewed attention on water safety in our area following the tragic death of 12-year-old Rontae Lester. First responders say he drowned after swimming in the Monongahela River. My heart goes out to his family and friends.
Naturally, the community is coming together with a singular question: How can we prevent tragedies like this from happening again? State Sen. Camera Bartolotta (R-Washington) told local news media she is taking action by ordering warning signs and pushing for grant funding to add rescue access points.
In addition to access and awareness, we collectively recognize the value of education as well with many leaders calling for water safety education in schools, teaching students about hidden dangers like water temperatures, currents and drop-offs.
Recently, we stood along the Mon. River with members of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) and others to highlight the importance of boating safety on the water.
We can keep the conversation surrounding safety going.
Our Team 50th has established student advisors who can take all the educational information into our local schools. Student advisors serve a dual purpose. First, they highlight assets, attractions and activities in their school districts. Second, they make sure kids are engaged in the places where they live.
Water safety education fits perfectly with both goals. It gives students a chance to promote something that directly impacts their communities, and it strengthens their connections to local government by showing them how their voices and actions can shape real-world solutions.
As we work to make our rivers and waterways safer, let’s also not overlook the boater safety course my team is helping to host on Saturday, June 21 at Smitty’s Marina (119 River Ave., Belle Vernon) from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This certification course, which will be taught by the PFBC, is a great way for the first-time boater or seasoned boater to learn all the basic boating regulations and requirements.
There are resources out there, and they’re ready to be used. From the PFBC’s safety programs to student-led outreach in schools, we have the tools to keep everyone safe.
